Erin Brennan is a senior runner on the cross country/track teams who hails from Jamestown, R.I. She is majoring in English, with a specialization in professional writing.
Q: When did you initially get into running and at what point did you realize you were exceptionally good at it?
A: Basically, I was a real energetic kid, but not very coordinated or talented at any particular sport. I was pretty terrible at all of them actually. But I was fast and I started running cross country in middle school and never looked back.
Q: What do you think about on a long run?
A: They get pretty boring. They're pretty long (12miles), and it is a lot better when you have a teammate with you. Listening to music helps, but being with someone is the best thing to keep from dying of boredom.
Q: Do you ever go running around Wilmington? Where?
A: All the time. We really like running by the beach. We also try to go to Greenville Lake sometimes or downtown.
Q: What athletes do you admire?
A: My favorite athlete is Rajon Rondo of the Celtics. He's not a runner, but he's my favorite.
Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: I could probably live on Starburst. I'm a sugar junkie.
Q: If you could hang out with a celebrity or professional athlete for a day who would it be?
A: I would have to say Brittany Spears. Everyone is going to make fun of me for that, but I love Brittany Spears.
Q: How do you think you have grown as a student?
A: I have definitely grown up a lot. I started out not really knowing what was going on or how to balance being a student and an athlete, which is hard. I didn't really figure it out until my sophomore year. I really didn't get good grades my freshman year and had to figure out how to schedule myself.
Q: How do you think you have matured as an athlete since your first year?
A: I have definitely developed as an athlete and gotten better every year. The coaching staff has really helped with that because they give us a lot of support in the athletic and academic areas.
Q: Are you a music listener when you run by yourself?
A: Yes. I get bored if I don't listen to music when I work out.
Q: What's your favorite music to listen to while running?
A: I listen to a lot of Chris Brown or Lil' Wayne...anything up beat. A lot of rap, something to keep me going.
