BOONE, North Carolina - Seniors Wil Zahorodny and Lindsay Ester led the UNCW men's and women's cross country teams to 11th place and eighth place finishes, respectively, at the Blue Ridge Open Cross Country Invitational late Friday.
The Seahawks, going their final tune-up before the CAA Championships in two weeks, were among 26 teams battling wet and windy conditions at the State Farm Fields in Boone. The men raced on an 8k course, while the women covered 5k.
Zahorodny finished in 42nd place with a time of 26:04. Ester went 19:14 in the women's race for 38th place overall.
"We didn't run that fast overall, but our top five runners grouped well," said Layne Schwier, assistant cross country/track and field coach. "Erin (Brennan) was a little off today after being very consistent this season. I was happy to see Lindsay (Ester) back to where she needs to be for us to finish well.
"The men's race was really strong. Our guys were hurt by the fast start that is even more detrimental in thinner air. Wil was solid up front, but wasn't quite on his game today. Freshman Ryan O'Connor continues to get stronger and is establishing himself as our No. 2 runner.
"At this point in the season, most of the hard work is done. We'll fine tune some and start resting for the CAA's in two weeks."
Coach Layne Schwier's team next participates in the CAA Championships on Oct. 29 in Hampton, Ga.
