HAMPTON, Ga. - The UNCW men and women rallied behind seniors Wil Zahorodny and Erin Brennan once again to each finish third at the GSU Invitational early Saturday at the Nash Farm Battlefield outside of Atlanta.
Running on the same course that will be the site of next month's CAA Championships, the Seahawks came in third out of 10 teams on the men's side and third out of nine entries in the women's race.
Zahorodny was the top runner for the Seahawks for the third time in as many races. The Damascus, Md., product wound up fourth on the 8k course in 25:47. Kennesaw State's Nabil Hamid won the race with a time of 25:39.
Brennan, meanwhile, continued her solid final season by coming in seventh in the women's race with a time of 23:09 on the 6k course. Georgia State's Hannah Stefanoff won the women's event with a time of 22:23.
"Our goal with this trip was to work together better as a team and gain valuable experience on the course we'll be racing in six weeks for the CAA," said Layne Schwier, assistant cross country/track and field coach. "We definitely learned a lot about the course and it was well worth the trip.
"We ran a very controlled race today. We wanted to stay conservative for the first half of the race. We then wanted strong finishes to gain positive experiences about the course. We didn't want anyone to be defeated by the course today.
"We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but the teams are coming together and once everyone gets healthy, we should be competitive in the CAA meet."
