WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Junior runner Wil Zahorodny is sharing the Colonial Athletic Association's Runner-of-the-Week honor after capturing first place last weekend in the Campbell Invitational.
Zahorodny, from Damascus, Md., clocked a time of 16:04 over the 5k layout near Campbell's track complex in Buies Creek, N.C. He beat out 34 other runners in the race and shared the league's initial weekly award with William & Mary's Chris Tyson
It was the first individual victory in Zahorodny's career at UNCW. He had previously finished in second place on four other occasions.
"We're very pleased for Wil," said assistant cross country/track and field coach Layne Schwier. "He had a solid summer of training and we expect a very strong season out of him. For him to start off with a win is a step in the right direction. The competition he will face will get stronger each week, but he expects to be competitive in every race this season."
The Seahawks compete in their second meet of the season on Friday when they host the Seahawk Invitational on campus. The men kick off the competition at 6 p.m., with the women following at 6:30 p.m.
