CONWAY, South Carolina - Competing in the first of seven races this season, the UNCW men's and women's cross country teams placed second behind host Coastal Carolina early Saturday in the Coastal Carolina Cross Country Invitational.

The men each traversed a 5K layout over the CCU campus on a warm, humid Saturday, with junior John Riemer (Monkton, Md.) and sophomore Rachel Qunn (Haddon Heights, N.J.) pacing UNCW's contingent.

In the men's standings, the Chanticleers came in first with 29 points, followed by UNCW (45), Concord (61), Catawba (103) and the CCU Alumni (150). On the women's side, Coastal won again with 18 points, ahead ofUNCW (39), Concord (82) and Catawba (97).

Concord senior Robby Peterson won the men's race with a time of 15:22. Riemer led UNCW's nine runners and placed fifth by clocking a 16:10 time in the 39-man race.

For the women, Coastal's Emily Marchini took first with a time of 18:22 over the 5K distance. Quinn placed fifth at 18:57 out of 37 runners.

"Our plan was to work on running in packs," said Layne Schwier, UNCW's assistant cross country/track and field coach. "Our women executed fairly well, but we weren't able to catch enough of the Coastal runners to keep them from winning the team race. We feel good about what we accomplished and just need to continue to get faster and keep the packs intact until later in the race.

"Rachel had a fantastic race and led the way. With newcomers Dakota Foskey and Alyssa Torres, they worked together really well throughout the race. Our upperclassmen just need to step it up with these young frontrunners.

"Our packs didn't stay like we'd hoped in the men's race and we definitely showed our inexperience. John and Dylan (Skinner) had encouraging races, but the men have a lot of work ahead of them.

"It's early and we're training hard. We've put in a lot of hard work the past two weeks. We got to see how we race together today and how we handle the pressure of a race vs. a workout."
