WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women's cross country team made it nine straight years of academic excellence Tuesday when the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) pegged the Seahawk harriers as an All-Academic Team.
To achieve the USTFCCA's award, teams must attain a cumulative team grade point average of at least 3.00 and have started at least five runners at their NCAA regional championships. Overall, 205 schools from 30 conferences made the list.
Six other Colonial Athletic Association schools joined UNCW on the list, including Delaware, Georgia State, Hofstra, James Madison, Towson and William & Mary,
"We're very proud of the women's team for accomplishing this once again," said assistant cross country/track and field coach Layne Schwier. "This is one of our team's goals every year. To keep this streak going for nine consecutive years shows it's more of an expectation for our program and not just a goal. We believe that being successful in the classroom is equally as important as how we run."
The Seahawks posted a 3.21 GPA. UNCW was one of 11 state schools to capture the award. The other state institutions honored include Appalachian State, Duke, East Carolina, Elon, High Point, N.C. State, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro and Wake Forest.
