CAA Player of the Week Nominee
Mateo Cardona, Junior, Midfielder, Cali, Colombia/Colegio Britanico
Cardona’s stroke in the waning minutes of Saturday’s game gave UNCW a 2-1 win over high-scoring Delaware in Newark. Following a Delaware foul just outside the penalty area, Cardona sent his shot into the upper corner for the go-ahead goal. It was his second goal of the season. The snapped a three-game losing skid to the Blue Hens, including a 1-0 loss last season.
CAA Rookie of the Week Nominee
Sean Melvin, Freshman, Goalkeeper, Vancouver, British Columbia/Burnaby
Melvin went 2-0 on the week and posted his second shutout of the season. He drew the start against UNC Chapel Hill and answered the call with four saves in the 1-0 Seahawk win. Against Delaware, he stepped onto the pitch in the second half and picked up the victory while facing nine shots. The start against #11 UNC was his first since Sept. 21.
The Seahawks, who have played a strong non-conference road schedule, posted a 2-0 week with road victories at #11 UNC Chapel Hill (1-0) and Delaware (2-1) … Sophomore Jordan Cordero proved to be the difference in UNCW’s win over the Tar Heels … His first career goal on his second career shot came in the 36th minute … Freshman Sean Melvin made four saves and earned his second shutout of the season … The Seahawks shutdown the top offense in the nation on Saturday as they held Delaware to just two shots on goal and 15 total … Sophomore Colin Bonner opened the scoring as he notched his first goal since the season opener against Ohio State … Junior Mateo Cardona scored the difference maker off a free kick with under four minutes remaining … UNCW has posted a 6-3 mark in games away from the UNCW Soccer Stadium this season.
