BOONE, North Carolina - Sophomore Mateo Cardona needed less than a minute to score the game-winning goal as UNCW edged host Appalachian State, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Stadium.

The win evened the Seahawks' record at 1-1-1 as they completed a 1-1 week with both matches on the road. The Mountaineers, meanwhile, suffered their first loss of the season to dip to 2-1.

"I'm very happy with the outcome," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "It's a tough place to play and they're a very experienced side defensively. This is a good win and something we hope to build upon."

ASU ranked sixth nationally in goals against average in 2011 at 0.63 goals per game.

On the winning goal, junior Michael Parrish forced an ASU turnover by the backline and sent a short cross to a charging Cardona, who took a touch and launched a shot from 20 yards out that clanged off the right post and into the goal at the 90:41 mark. It was his second goal of the season.

The victory was the first for the Seahawks on the road since the 2010 season when they topped George Mason, 2-1, in the season finale on Nov. 6. UNCW was 0-8-1 in 2011 away from the friendly confines of the UNCW Soccer Stadium. Danny Free finished with three saves on the afternoon for ASU.

Sophomore goal keeper Brad Newman made three saves in recording his first career clean sheet in two starts.

For Cardona, it was his first career game-winner and the third goal of his career.

The Seahawks and Mountaineers were basically even on the stat sheet with both sides taking 12 shots and ASU holding a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

UNCW returns to action on Sept. 7, when it faces nationally-ranked Furman on the opening day of the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C. The Seahawks will face their third and fourth Southern Conference foes of the season that weekend when they also take on College of Charleston on Sept. 9.
