WILMINGTON, North Carolina - UNCW head men's soccer coach Aidan Heaney has announced the release of his 2011 schedule, one that includes six games against 2010 NCAA tournament teams, including NCAA semifinalist participant North Carolina.
"We have a challenging and exciting schedule in front of us, beginning with North Carolina on the road, who has been to three of the past four semifinals," said Heaney. "The Colonial Athletic Association will be tight again this year, with so much parity in the league. The schedule is one that I feel will really tests our team and pit us against some formidable opponents. Strength of schedule is key for possible postseason opportunities."
In addition to the Tar Heels, the Seahawks will take on NCAA tournament participants Duke, Coastal Carolina (Big South Champion), UNC Greensboro (Southern Conference Champion), defending CAA champion William & Mary and Old Dominion.
UNCW opens its 11th season under the direction of Heaney on Aug. 27, in Chapel Hill before hosting long-time rival Campbell in its home opener on Sept. 1.
The Seahawks will again host the UNCW/Courtyard by Marriott Classic on the weekend of Sept. 9-11. Also playing in the tournament are Hartford and Wofford.
Colonial Athletic Association play begins on Sept. 17, when UNCW hosts William & Mary. The CAA will again play a full round robin schedule with all teams playing each other once.
UNCW will host North Florida on Aug. 20 in its lone exhibition game.
