- The Seahawks play 11 home matches, nine in the regular season, including the annual UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic (Sept. 14, 16).
- Including exhibition games, the Seahawks will play seven teams that played in the 2011 NCAA tournament. The teams combined for a 9-7-1 record.
- St. Mary's reached the quarterfinal round while Charlotte advanced to the finals.
- The Seahawks face a daunting stretch when they take on three NCAA tournament programs in James Madison (Oct. 10), Old Dominion (Oct. 13) and Georgia State (Oct. 17). All three matches will be played at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Head Coach Aidan Heaney owns a record of 96-96-23 in 11+ seasons with the Seahawks.He's second to Calvin Lane (129) in most wins by a UNCW coach.
The Seahawks had four players sign professional contracts off the 2011 squad. Brandon Miller (Rochester), Daniel Roberts (Wilmington), Christian Davidson (Wilmington) and Josh Boone (Dayton). All played in the United Soccer League.

The Seahawks visit Greenville, S.C., for the weekend when they face off with Southern Conference members Furman and College of Charleston in the Diadora/Spinx Invitational on Friday and Sunday. This will be the first of two tournaments the Seahawks play in during the regular season. UNCW hosts the UNCW Hilton Garden Inn Classic next weekend (Sept. 14/16) with St. Mary's, Binghamton and Appalachian State.

Cardona Strikes Early In Overtime To Lift Seahawks
Mateo Cardona needed just 41 seconds to score his second goal of the season and send the Seahawks home winners as UNCW edged host Appalachian State, 1-0, in overtime on Sunday. The victory was the first of the season for UNCW and its first road win since 2010. Junior Brad Newman made three saves in recording his first career cleansheet. Story / Box Score

A Look At Furman
The Paladins enter the weekend tournament with a 3-1 record after splitting a pair of matches last weekend in Charleston, S.C., at the Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic. Furman dropped a 3-2 decision to Dayton before rallying on Sunday for a 2-0 win over Stanford. Coleton Henning, the reigning Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year, scored both goals in that match to give him a team-leading six points on three goals. Danny Hojaij and Adrian McInnis are the Paladin playmakers with three assists apiece. FU has won 11 SoCon tournament championships and have won or shared 19 regular season titles.

A Look At Coll. of Charleston
The Cougars caputred their own Aaron Olitsky Memorial Classic last weekend with wins over Stanford and Dayton. CofC edged Stanford 2-1 in overtime and blanked Dayton, 1-0, to win the Classic. With a record of 2-1, Charleston has played three close contests, all one-goal decisions, including 1-0 season-opening setback at South Carolina. Ralphie Lunday has two of the Cougars' three goals on the season to lead the side. In goal, Kees Heemskerk has been solid allowing 0.66 goals per game.

The Last Time They Met ...
Furman: The Seahawks edged the 20th-ranked Paladins, 3-2, in thrilling fashion. With FU holding a 2-1 lead, Devan Carrol drew the Seahawks even with seven seconds remaining in regulation. In the second overtime, Matt Brown scored on a breakaway to give UNCW the win in the only game played between the two until this weekend. Box Score

Coll. of Charleston: The Seahawks and Cougars are tied 4-4-1 in their all-time series, but haven't matched up since the 2007 season. In that game, CofC was able to take advantage of a 10-man Seahawk side in the 79th minute to score the only goal of the match. Box Score | Series Results

Seahawks In The Preseason
UNCW dropped both games to Charlotte and NC State by the identical scores of 3-1. In their final exhibition game, a goal from freshman Joel Perrell narrowed UNCW's deficit to 2-1, but the Wolfpack pushed it to a two-goal cushion in the 86th minute to thwart UNCW's rally. Colonial Athletic Association
UNCW was picked in a tie for eighth with Hofstra in the 12-team circuit in a vote of the league's coaches (story). The CAA sent four teams to the NCAA tournament including conference champion Delaware, who claimed the league title for the first time. Joining the Blue Hens in the 48-team tournament were Old Dominion, James Madison and Georgia State. ODU was picked by the league's coaches to win the conference title and received nine of a possible 11 first-place votes. James Madison received one vote and was second followed by defending champion Delaware. William & Mary and Northeastern rounded out the top five.

Tough Slate Awaits
UNCW will tackle a tough schedule in 2012 with seven teams appearaing in's preseason top-48 (Story). Duke, who is eighth on the list, is one of five of those teams to play at the UNCW Soccer Stadium this season. The Seahawks also have the distinction of playing the top three teams in the Southern Conference in the forms of Furman, Coll. of Charleston and UNCG.

Boulanger Honored
Senior midfielder Etienne Boulanger was honored by the league's coaches by being named to the preason honorable mention All-CAA squad. Boulanger is UNCW's top-returning career scorer with 29 points on 13 goals and three asists. Last season, he totaled five points on a pair of goals and an assist.

Name Tags Needed
Coach Heaney welcome 15 newcomers to the program this season. Eight saw action during the preseason including freshmen strikers Colin Bonner and Joel Perrell. Both played well during their time on the field with Bonner starting against NC State and Perrell scoring UNCW's lone goal against the Wolfpack. The Seahawks enter the season with no returning minutes in goal after All-CAA goalkeeper Brandon Miller played every minute in 2011.

Collegiate Debuts For Bolen And Newman
Brandon Bolen finished with six saves to help the Seahawks fashion a 2-all draw against UNCG. Brad Newman also made his debut this week against Campbell in a 2-1 loss in Buis Creek. In his second start, coming at Appalachian State, Newman turned aside three shots for the win and cleansheet.
