WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Former UNCW soccer standout and Wilmington Hammerhead player Daniel Roberts has returned to his alma mater as he joins Head Coach Aidan Heaney’s coaching staff for the 2014 season.

“I am thrilled Daniel has returned to join our staff at UNCW! He was a star player for us and has the personality suited to be a top coach. It will be a smooth transition replacing Lee Williams, as Daniel is obviously very familiar with me and the program, so he can hit the ground running. I know he is excited to accept this opportunity and our players will certainly benefit from his knowledge, work ethic and character.”

Roberts helped UNCW to its first Colonial Athletic Association title in 2009 and led the Seahawks into the second round of the NCAA tournament that same season. In the opening round of the NCAA tournament, Roberts notched the tying goal of a 1-all draw at Charlotte in which UNCW would advance following penalty kicks to the second round.

While with the Seahawks, Roberts was a three-time All-CAA selection, earning All-Rookie honors in 2008, third-team honors in 2009 and second-team honors in 2011. In 65 career games, he posted 42 points on 12 goals and 18 assists. In three different seasons he doled out five assists and in 2009, he scored four times. He ranks fourth all-time at UNCW with those 18 assists.

Following his career with the Seahawks, Roberts was selected by the Houston Dynamo in the fourth round of the Major League Soccer supplement draft, but did not sign with the club, opting to sign with the Wilmington Hammerheads of the USL Professional Division. He notched one goal in 26 career games with the hometown Hammerheads.
