BROWNS SUMMITT, North Carolina – Sophomore Annette Lyche carded a two-over-par 74 to lead UNCW in the first round of the Bryan National Collegiate Friday on the Champions Course at the Bryan Park Golf and Enrichment Center.

Playing under cool and breezy conditions, UNCW finds itself in a tie for 14th place with co-host Wake Forest after the opening 18 holes with a team total of 305. Third-ranked Duke holds a two-shot lead over the field following an opening-round result of four-over-par 292. No. 22 Michigan State (294) is second, while Florida State (295) holds third and Louisville (297) occupies fourth.

“I thought we really handled the golf course well today,” said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. “For being such a long course, I felt we did a better job today handling both our putting and our up-and-down situations. We had it going really well through the first 13 holes, but we were finished on some of the tougher holes on the course, so we ended up giving some shots back towards the end. Still, I am very pleased with today’s round as it shows that we can compete with some of the top teams in the nation.”

Lyche, a native of Baerum, Norway, is part of a five-way tie for 20th after posting her lowest round of the spring. Senior Lori Beth Adams (76) and sophomore Meghan Theiss (76) are both part of a massive 21-player deadlock for 34th at four-over-par. Seniors Megan Burnham (79/T-69th) and Laverry Kumar (83/91st) completed UNCW’s entry.

“Annette hit the ball well all round and even when she missed, she put herself in a position to get herself up and down,” said Ho. “Overall, our execution in our short game was much better today than it has been in recent weeks. I felt like our ball-striking was very solid today as well.”

Duke’s Laetitia Beck, Virginia’s Portland Rosen and Michigan State’s Kelly Grassel are all tied for the individual lead as all three players carded two-under-par 70’s during Friday’s round. Wake Forest’s Sierra Sims and Michigan State’s Allyssa Farrell are both one stroke back of the trio in a tie for fourth at one-under-par.

Second-round action in the Bryan National Collegiate gets underway Saturday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.
