Hagsund Paces UNCW At CAA Championships

SOUTHPORT, North Carolina - Senior Sofia Hagsund carded an even par 72 Friday and sits in a tie for third place to lead UNCW in the first round of the 2012 CAA Women's Golf Championships at the Reserve Club of the St. James Plantation.
Hagsund, a native of Landskrona, Sweden, is part of a three-way tie for third with Shabril Brewer of James Madison and Elizabeth Hay of Old Dominion after all three players finished the opening 18 holes at even par. James Madison's Nicole Sakamoto and Old Dominion's Samantha Morrell are tied for the individual lead after both players posted a first-round result of one-under-par 71 on Friday.
Sophomore Lori Beth Adams is two shots back of Hagsund in a tie for seventh at two-over-par 74 while sophomores Laverry Kumar (76/T-12th) and Jeanne Metivier (78/T-17th) find themselves four and six strokes back of Hagsund following the first 18 holes. Senior Alei Mitchell (83/T-39th) completes UNCW's entry.
UNCW combined for an opening round 300 and are just six strokes off the pace set by first-round leader James Madison (294). Old Dominion (299) holds a one stroke edge over the Seahawks for second place while Xavier (302) is two strokes back of UNCW in fourth.
Second round action at the 2012 CAA Women's Golf Championships begins Saturday at 9 a.m. Players will tee off in three-player waves from the No. 1 and No. 10 tees.
