Adams, Hagsund Pace UNCW At Pinehurst

PINEHURST, North Carolina - Paced by an even-par 72 from senior Sofia Hagsund and a one-under-par 71 from sophomore Lori Beth Adams, the UNCW women's golf team finished in a tie for fifth place at the 2012 Pinehurst Spring Challenge on Tuesday.

Playing on the par 72, 5,983-yard layout of the No. 6 Course at the Pinehurst Resort, the Seahawks posted a three-round total of 892 (295-298-299=892) to remain tied with Big Ten member Penn State (305-288-299=892), with whom they were deadlocked with after the opening 36 holes on Monday.  

No. 22 North Carolina State led wire-to-wire to capture its third team title of the season, finishing with a 54-hole scorecard of 865 (286-285-294=865) to post a 17-shot victory over the field. Maryland (296-290-296=882) claimed second while Colonial Athletic Association foe Old Dominion finished one shot back of the Terrapins in third (296-293-294=883).

Hagsund carded her third round of even par or lower this season Tuesday to earn a share of 10th place at three-over-par (74-73-72=219) while Adams' career-low round propelled the Burlington, N.C., product into a tie for 12th with a four-over-par scorecard (75-74-71=220). Sophomore Jeanne Metivier (73-79-77=229/T-42), senior Alei Mitchell (73-76-80=229/T-42nd) and sophomore Laverry Kumar (76-75-79=230/T-48th) completed UNCW' entry.

NC State's Brittany Marchand carded a final-round 68 to emerge as individual champion with a five-under-par result of 211 (73-70-68). Marchand finished two shots ahead of fellow Wolfpack teammate Vivian Tsui (72-68-73=216) and Old Dominion's Elizabeth Haycock (70-73-70=213).

UNCW returns to action this weekend as it hosts the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic at the River Landing Golf Course in nearby Wallace. The Seahawks will welcome 10 teams to the Cape Fear region for the 54-hole event that features 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 holes on Sunday. Play on both days will start with a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. Admission is free for the entire tournament.
