East Carolina Rallies For Classic Title

WALLACE, North Carolina - East Carolina erased a three-stroke deficit in the final round to capture its second consecutive team championship and James Madison's Nicole Sakamoto won medalist honors in the UNCW Seahawk Classic Sunday at River Landing Golf Course.
The Pirates set a tournament record with their 54-hole total of 292-288-286=866, smashing UNCW's total of 884 in 2007 by 18 strokes. Old Dominion finished second at 294-289-289=872, first and second round leader Longwood wound up third at 291-286-296=873 and host UNCW came in fourth at 296-296-295=887.
ECU had a 580 total heading into Sunday's final round, but carded a 286 in the last round to overtake Longwood and edge ODU. The Pirates had two below-par scores in the last round to help Kevin Williams and his club successfully defend their crown.
Sakamoto, a senior from Honolulu, Hawaii , fashioned a 70-70-72=212 for first place on the individual leaderboard, edging ODU's Samantha Morrell by just one stroke. Morrell finished at 73-70-70=213 for second place and Longwood's Cameron Carter came in third at 73-66-75=214. Carter's 6-under-par 66 in the second round matched the tournament record established by UNCW's Carmen Perez-Narbon in 2007.
For UNCW, sophomore Lori Beth Adams shot a 71-71-74=216 to tie for fifth place individually. Another sophomore, Laverry Kumar, tied for ninth with a 72-74-72=218 score. Senior Sofia Hagsund finished 23rd overall with a 79-74-73=226 score and senior Alei Mitchell tied for 28th at 77-77-76=230. Sophomore Jeanne Metivier rounded out UNCW's team entries with a 76-77-82=235, good enough for a tie for 38th.
Two Seahawks played as individuals in the two-day event. Freshman Mallory Warrick tied for 45th with a 80-78-80=238 card and junior Danielle Lamy came in 50th at 79-75-85=239.
The 11 teams wrapped up the first 18 holes on Saturday when play was suspended due to darkness and resumed play early Sunday. An extended weather delay occurred again Sunday before play was completed.UNCW plays again on April 6-8 when the Seahawks participate in the Bryan National Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C.
