BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – Senior Lori Beth Adams carded a two-over-par 74 to lead UNCW in the first round of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic Friday at The University Club.

Adams is part of a six-way tie for ninth at two-over-par to pace UNCW, who finds itself in 10th place after the opening round with a 315 team scorecard, one stroke in front of Texas-San Antonio (316).

“Overall, I thought we played well under some tough conditions,” said UNCW Head Coach Cindy Ho. “The winds were strong today, which helped to dry out the course and made tough pin placements even more difficult.

“We started on the harder side (back nine) of the golf course and I felt we got through some difficult holes early very well. We made the turn in a good position, but we had a few miscues early on our back nine that caused us some problems. I was proud of how we rebounded and finished strong, which was huge in keeping us in a good position heading into the second round.”

Sophomore Annette Lyche posted a first-round 76 to earn a share of 17th while junior Mallory Warrick (82/T-63rd), sophomore Meghan Theiss (83/T-69th) and senior Megan Burnham (88/81st) completed UNCW’s lineup.

“Lori Beth and Annette both played very well tee-to-green today,” said Ho. “They were both able to keep momentum going under difficult circumstances and posted good scores because of it. It was a difficult day for everyone in the field, but we did a good job of managing the course and not allowing mistakes to derail us.”

Purdue holds the team lead after 18 holes with a nine-over-par result of 297, two shots ahead of second-place Southern Methodist (299). No. 4 Arkansas (302) and Kentucky (302) are tied for third while UCF is in fifth (303).

Purdue’s Aurora Kim holds a one-shot advantage over the field as she carded the only under-par round of the day with a one-under-par 71. LSU’s Madelene Sagstrom (72) and Elyse Smidinger (72) are tied for second while five players are part of a deadlock for fifth at one-over-par.

Due to the threat of inclement weather, the final two rounds of the LSU Tiger Golf Classic will be played on Saturday. The teams will begin the day with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. CST and will begin the final round shortly after the conclusion of the second round.
