WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW women’s golf head Coach Cindy Ho announced the addition of sophomore student-athletes Annette Lyche and Meghan Theiss to her roster for the spring semester.
Lyche and Theiss are both eligible to play immediately for the Seahawks. Both players have two and half years of eligibility remaining.
“I am very excited to welcome Annette and Meghan to the Seahawk golf family,” said Ho. “They are excellent academic students and talented athletes who bring tremendous experience from strong golf schools. They immediately provide us depth and scoring potential going into a challenging spring schedule. I feel very fortunate that Coach Jay Goble at Baylor and Coach Courtney Trimble at Louisville respected me, our golf program and what we have accomplished to encourage their players to consider UNCW.
“With Baylor being a member of the Big 12 and Louisville a part of the former Big East Conference, both players have competed in high-level tournaments similar to our schedule. Both Meghan and Annette are familiar with the level of competition and should transition easily when we begin to compete.
“I am always looking for kids with great character, talent and potential. You want players who are strong academically, who have high goals, a strong work ethic and want to make a significant contribution to their team. Both Meghan and Annette have outgoing personalities and are a great fit for our program.”
A native of Baerum, Norway, Lyche took part in eight events during her freshman season at Baylor, posting a 76.70 stroke average in 24 rounds played. An Academic All-Big 12 Rookie Team selection, Lyche also participated in one tournament for the Bears in the fall, posting a 76-82-77=235 scorecard in the Mason Rudolph Championship in October.
Lyche excelled on the junior ranksprior to starting her collegiate career, finishing 2nd in the Titleist Tour Order of Merit on the Norwegian Junior Elite Tour in back-to-back seasons (2009-10). She has also represented Norway in international competition, taking part in the 2013 European Women's Championships, the 2010 and 2012 National Team Championships and the Tinius Cup on three occasions (2007, 2008 & 2009).
“Annette has a tremendous amount of international experience having represented Norway many times,” Ho said. “As a starter during her freshman year, she was able to compete against some of the best teams and players in the country and help Baylor to a top 25 national ranking. Her strengths are her accuracy and consistency. She is an intelligent player, has good course management and is a very steady player.”
Theiss joins the Seahawks after seeing action in three fall tournaments for the Cardinals, where she fashioned a 76.60 stroke average and posted one Top 20 finish with a tie for 19th in the Cardinal Cup. Theiss appeared in six tournaments as a freshman during the 2012-13 season, ending the campaign with a 79.50 stroke average. She was named to the WGCA Academic All-Scholar Team following the 2012-13 season and also garnered Dean’s List and AD Academic Honor Roll honors during all three of her semesters at Louisville.
Theiss played varsity golf for seven years at Oldham County and was named the team MVP the last five seasons. She finished fourth in the Kentucky State Championship in 2012 and won the 2011 Seniors All-Star Championship. Theiss also captured the Junior Bluegrass Championship in 2009 and 2011 and qualified for the US Women's Amateur Public Links in 2011.
“Meghan had the strongest of recommendations from Coach Trimble and was part of a Louisville team that was extremely deep in talent,” Ho commented. “She competed in more than half of their schedule her freshmen year while earning Academic All-American honors as she gained valuable experience on a strong team. Meghan’s strength is her athleticism and work ethic. She is talented, has excellent length, the potential to shoot low scores and is very coachable.”
UNCW opens the spring portion of their schedule March 3-4 in the Bruin Wave Classic at the El Caballero Country Club in Los Angeles, Calif.
