WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The UNCW women’s golf team will welcome 13 schools, accumulated from seven different conferences, to the River Landing Golf Course this weekend for the 13th annual UNCW Seahawk Classic.

The 54-hole, five-count-four event, which will be played on the par 72, 6,106 yard layout of the Wallace, N.C., property’s Landing Course, will stretch across the weekend. The teams wil play 36 holes on Saturday, starting with a shotgun start at 9 a.m., while Sunday's final round will begin with a 8:45 a.m. shotgun start.

The host Seahawks will be joined by fellow Colonial Athletic Association opponents Delaware, Old Dominion and Richmond.  Bucknell and Navy will be representing the Patriot League while state schools Elon and UNCG will come from the Southern Conference.  The Sun Belt Conference will send 2005 champion Georgia State, as well as two first-time participants in Middle Tennessee State and South Alabama.  Four other conferences will have one team a piece in the tournament as Princeton (Ivy League), Morehead State (Ohio Valley), and Longwood (Big South) round out the tournament field.

Two-time defending champion East Carolina is not a part of 2013 field, leaving the door open for a new champion to take the crown.  It was ECU who overcame a three stroke deficit in the final round of the 2012 classic to reclaim their tournament title.

UNCW will attempt to add its fourth Seahawk Classic title to the trophy case after winning the event three times in a seven-year span (2004-10).  The Seahawks have fared well in their home spring event, posting 10 top five finishes in 12 appearances, including a fourth-place result in 2012.

UNCW has been led this year by the play of junior Lori Beth Adams.  Adams has averaged a team-best 74.04 stroke average so far this season while compiling six top ten and three top five finishes.  Adams posted the first top five finish of her career with a tie for fifth during last season’s event.

Adams will be joined in the lineup by fellow juniors Megan Burnham (82.83) and Jeanne Metivier (81.57) and sophomore Mallory Warrick (83.56). Seniors Danielle Lamy (83.69) and Brittany Gamby will compete in the Seahawk Classic as individual entries.

UNCW will look to use the Seahawk Classic as a springboard into the 2013 Colonial Athletic Association Women’s Golf Championships, which will take place April 19-21 on the Reserve Course of the St. James Plantation in Southport, N.C.  The Seahawks are the two-time defending champions of the event and have won the conference title in four of the past six seasons.
