Senior Sofia Hagsund posted a 78 on Thursday to lead UNCW in the first round of the NCAA Central Regional at the Ohio State Golf Club

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The UNCW women's golf team carded a team total 323 Thursday and sits in 22nd place after the first round of the 2012 NCAA Central Regional on the Scarlet Course of the Ohio State Golf Club.

The Seahawks are one shot back of No. 41 Kentucky (322) and just nine strokes off the pace of No. 28 Florida State (314), who occupies 14th place after the opening 18 holes.

"It was a tough day for us," said UNCW head coach Cindy Ho. "We knew the course would be challenging due to the windy conditions, but we struggled with the long game and that put a lot of pressure on our short game to score. We were in a good position after the opening nine holes, but we failed to play solid golf on the back nine and gave away too many shots down the stretch."

No.3 Southern California holds the first-round lead after posting a 10-over-par total of 298. No. 9 Georgia (299) is one shot back of the Trojans in second while 2010 National Champion Purdue (301) is three shots off the pace in third.

Senior Sofia Hagsund fired an opening round 78 and is part of a 12-player tie for 42nd place to lead UNCW. Sophomore Laverry Kumar is two shots back of Hagsund in a deadlock for 68th following a first-round result of 80. Sophomores Lori Beth Adams (82/T-91st) and Jeanne Metivier (83/T-101st) and senior Alei Mitchell (88/122nd) complete the Seahawks entry.

Vanderbilt's Marina Alex, the No. 11 player in the country, sits atop the individual leader board after carding a two-under-par 70 on Thursday. Purdue's Paula Reto and Florida State's Maria Salinas are both one shot off Alex's pace in a tie for second at one-under. Four players are two strokes back of Alex in a tie for fourth at even par.

UNCW begins the second round of the 2012 NCAA Central Regional Friday at 8:55 a.m. on the No. 10 tee. The Seahawks will once again be paired with East Carolina and Michigan.

"It will be important for us to put today behind us and just go out tomorrow and play solid golf," said Ho. There is still plenty of golf to be played, so we must regroup and give our best effort tomorrow in order to get back in the hunt."
