WILMINGTON, N.C.UNC Wilmington’s 330 student-athletes continued their longstanding tradition of excelling in the classroom during the Fall 2008 semester, compiling a 3.017 cumulative grade point average as a whole.

The group, which has consistently finished high in the NCAA’s student-athlete graduation rates, also owns a 3.004 cumulative GPA. Ninety-six student-athletes achieved a 3.50 or greater GPA, and 14 individuals posted a perfect 4.00 GPA.

“We’re very proud of the academic accomplishments of our student-athletes” said Sandy Williford, assistant athletic director for academics. “When our student-athletes come to UNCW, they are taught the philosophy of student first, athlete second. They have work ethic, discipline and commitment. These things, along with the many support programs we have in place, allow them to set high goals and achieve them.”

The women’s tennis team led the way academically for the 19 teams, racking up an impressive 3.520 GPA, followed closely by women’s cross country (3.392), volleyball (3.367), women’s swimming and diving (3.358) and women’s soccer (3.351).
