2007-08 UNCW Athletic Awards Banquet Winners 2007-08 UNCW Athletic Awards Banquet Winners

WILMINGTON, N.C. Baseball standout Daniel Hargrave and swimming workhorse Caitlin Kirsteier received the Thomas V. Moseley Award as UNC Wilmington’s top student-athletes for 2007-08 during Monday’s annual athletic awards banquet at the Burney Center.

In other major awards, Justin Barefoot and Jenny Cauble were honored with the Chancellor’s Cup Award, Todd Hendley was the inaugural recipient of the Soaring Seahawk Award, Bob Lloyd was presented the William J. Brooks Distinguished Service Award and the baseball squad garnered the Team Leadership Award.

A senior from Hurdle Mills, N.C., Hargrave has been one of the catalysts behind UNCW’s sparkling 33-9-1 record and national ranking on the diamond. He ranks fourth on the squad with a .346 batting average and leads Coach Mark Scalf’s club in at-bats and runs. He has 13 doubles, two triples and 14 home runs, starting all 43 games for the Seahawks.

Hargrave already stands among UNCW’s all-time Top 10 career leaders in 14 statistical categories, including runs, home runs and runs batted in. He will graduate next month with a degree in Communication Studies.

Kirsteier, only a sophomore, captured the CAA title in the 100 Butterfly and swam a leg on the winning 200 Medley Relay team at the recent CAA Swimming & Diving Championships. She also set a conference record in the 100 Fly with an NCAA “B” qualifying time of 53.90 and set school records in the 100 Fly, 50 Freestyle and 400 Medley Relay.

The Doylestown, Pa., swimmer, has also posted a 3.9 Grade Point Average in her major of education.

Cauble, meanwhile, has been one of the key reasons for the rapid emergence of the women’s soccer program. A four-year starter and two-time team captain, she has made the All-Conference team all four seasons, twice as a First-Team selection, and ranks among the top five in seven career statistical categories.

In the classroom, the Greensboro, N.C., resident has excelled as well. An accounting major with a 3.86 GPA, she has made the Dean’s List every semester and Chancellor’s List with a perfect 4.00 four times. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honors Society and Beta Alpha Psi, the National Accounting-Finance Honor Society.

Cauble was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team in both 2006 and 2007 and the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Scholar-Athlete Team the last two years. She has also received the UNCW Scholar-Athlete Award and CAA Commissioner’s Award all four years.

Since transferring to UNCW from Clemson four years ago, Barefoot has battled injuries throughout his baseball career. However, the senior outfielder from Benson, N.C., has continued to excel in the classroom and represent the Seahawks in the community.

This year, he has helped the Seahawks put together one of the best seasons in the school’s history and is on the watch list for the Lowe’s Senior Class Award.

In the classroom, Barefoot has compiled a 3.35 GPA in his major of exercise science. He has made the Dean’s List and received the Seahawk Award, Golden Seahawk Award, CAA Commissioner’s Award during his time here.

Hendley, a senior from Boone, N.C., was selected as the first recipient of the Soaring Seahawk Award, given annually to an individual who is an exemplary representative of UNCW’s student-athletes.

A member of the men’s basketball team for three years, Hendley has served as a team captain and excellent role model. He has been involved in numerous community service activities, traveling overseas the last two summers with the Athletes-In-Action ministry.

In early March, Hendley received the prestigious Dean Ehlers Leadership Award at the CAA’s post-season banquet for his leadership ability and service on and off the basketball court.

Lloyd received the William J. Brooks Distinguished Service Award, established in 1991 to recognize individuals who have contributed their time and talents to the betterment of the program.

A retiree who lives in Wilmington, Lloyd, a photographer, has been an invaluable asset to UNCW’s student-athletes, staff and administration. The school’s creative resources – from media guides to posters to calendars to today’s ever-evolving web site - have been enhanced by his tireless efforts, and he has also been involved in several fund-raising events to benefit the program.

For the eighth year, the department presented the Team Leadership Award to recognize an athletic team that demonstrated excellent leadership skills through community service, charitable and educational events

With approximately 360 volunteer hours logged, the baseball team participated in numerous community service projects. It accomplished this while remaining solid in the classroom – with 16 of its 33 players compiling a 3.00 or better in the fall.
The group’s community service, charitable and educational events included Freshman Move-In, Adopt-A-Highway, Reading Rocks, New Hanover Regional Medical Center Children’s Floor Visitation, Winter Park Elementary School Reading & Math assistance, CAA Blood Drive, Angel Tree, the Wilmington Baptist Association’s Coat Collection for the needy, raising proceeds for the Relay for Life and MS Foundation and conducting skills presentations at local pre-schools.
