October 12, 2011 With the clock ticking until Midnite Madness rings in the new basketball season, the main video board was lifted to the rafters of Trask Coliseum late Wednesday afternoon. The assembly passed inspection early in the day and was raised to its new home 30 feet above the floor by a pulley system. Workers began piecing together the board a few weeks ago and after passing inspection and testing, the massive video wonder is finally in place and ready to go.
October 4, 2011 The interior of Trask Coliseum continued to move closer to a finished look after crews made progress this week with the installation of most of the seating in the lower level. The main video board has been fitted with panels and sits in the middle of the arena, anxiously waiting for electricians to perform their magic and clear the way for its final destination 40 feet above the hardwood. Overall, the project has required more than 3 million pieces to complete.
September 28, 2011 Trask Coliseum's $2 million renovation gained steam this week with the assembling of the main video board and the installation of chairback seating. The project is slated to be completed in mid-October and will give the 6,000-seat arena a sparkling new look for the upcoming 2011-12 basketball season. Work crews worked feverishly on Wednesday to install chairback seating on the bottom level. In addition, the frame of the massive video board began to disappear as Daktronics personnel fitted the shell with panels.
September 21, 2011 With the floor now complete, it's time for the scoreboards to take center stage in Trask Coliseum's ongoing $2 million renovation. Crews installed the scoreboard high above the east end early Wednesday and continued to piece together the massive 21x15-foot video board that will hang over mid-court. The monstrous display, produced by South Dakota-based electronics firm Daktronics, will feature an LED screen that measures 17x10 and will be used for replays and advertising. In addition, some of the chairback seating has arrived. A total of 566 chairbacks will be located on the north side and 148 are scheduled for the west end, giving the arena 714 in the lower level.
September 12, 2011 Following a break for other events and significant infrastructure improvements, visual changes began to emerge Monday in Trask Coliseum. Under the watchful eye of J&J Flooring's Martin Graddon, the painting of the lines and graphics for the Trask floor got under way. The painting part of the process will be completed this week and varnish is up next for the extensive remodel.
August 10, 2011 Crews put the finishing touches on Hanover Hall's remodel while renovations continued to crank up in Trask Coliseum this week. Workers painted the trim on the bottom of the newly-installed bleachers in Hanover Hall late Wednesday. Also, J&J Flooring workers began the laborious process of sanding the floor in Trask Coliseum in preparation for a new floor design, paint scheme and varnishing.
August 3, 2011 Trask Coliseum opened up significantly on Wednesday when work crews began transferring some of the bleachers to their new home in Hanover Hall. J&J Flooring workers completed the dismantling of the south and west bleachers and wheeled them through Trask to a hydraulic truck for the 50-yard trek to nearby Hanover Hall. The vinyl bleachers will be repurposed in Hanover Hall, completing a summer transformation for the volleyball facility.
August 1, 2011 The $2 million renovation to Trask Coliseum continued Monday when sections of the bleachers were dismantled and readied for transportation to Hanover Hall. Gymnasium flooring specialist J&J Flooring also worked on the conduit trenches in Trask to meet the arena's expanded cabling and wiring needs.
July 29, 2011 The renovation of Trask Coliseum ramped up Friday when sections of the floor were extracted to create conduit trenches that will hold wiring and cabling for the new project. Workers from J&J Flooring, Inc., sawed four-foot wide swaths before lifting pieces of the floor out of place to result in a trench. When completed, the trenches will feature 18 conduit pipes.
July 27, 2011 With the center court scoreboard out of the way, the renovation schedule continued on Wednesday as the public address and speaker system was taken down from its perch above the former scoreboard. Later this week, conduit for the new courtside scoring tables, pressrow endzone scoreboards will be place below the playing floor.
July 25, 2011 The center court scoreboard was lowered from the rafters late Monday, beginning the next chapter of the legendary home venue for the UNCW Seahawks. The removal of the scoreboard is the first of several steps to make way for a state-of -the-art scoreboard, sound system and the introduction of chairback seating in the lower level of the arena.
