FAIRFAX, Va. – UNC Wilmington sailed to its eighth straight Colonial Athletic Association men’s swimming and diving championship and the women’s team finished third on Saturday at the McKay Natatorium.

The Seahawks topped second-place Old Dominion by 132 points, while the women climbed from a seventh-place standing after one day into a third-place finish. Towson, meanwhile, claimed its second straight women’s title.

“I’m thrilled with how well our swimmers and divers performed,” said Head Coach Dave Allen. “I’ve never been at a meet where there were such consistent, solid swimming throughout the whole competition.”

Head Coach Dave Allen was honored as CAA Men’s Coach-of-the-Year for the fifth time. UNCW’s depth paid off as seven Seahawks, led by sophomore Luke Murphy, finished among the top-20 point scorers in the championship.

“Our guys did a fantastic job of answering every run Old Dominion made at them tonight. ODU is a good team and were ready for the meet,” said Allen. “I was really impressed with the tenacity our women showed each session. They did a great job of climbing the standings each day.”

Freshman Aidan Akkari was the lone Seahawk to earn a CAA championship on the day, taking top honors in the 200 Backstroke with a time of 1:46.13.

UNCW continued to rewrite its own record book as eight program standards were shattered.

On the men’s side, three records were broken, including one in the finals as sophomore Luke Murphy raced to a second-place finish in a time of 15:34.62. Murphy broke a record (15:44.46) that was set in 1997 by Matt Allen at the CAA Championships.

Freshman Brandon Hicks rounded out UNCW’s record-breakers on the men’s side. Hicks finished second in the 200 Butterfly after finishing in a time of 1:49.53.

Senior Danielle Mortensen placed third and qualified for the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships by posting a school-record and “B” list time of 16:26.79, topping her own school-record of 16:39.39, set at the 2008 conference championship.

Junior Laura Chinni also made another entry in the record books by setting a UNCW record in the 200 Backstroke with a second-place time of 2:00.72 in the finals. Earlier in the day, Chinni, who already set two school records in the previous two days, broke the record with a time of 2:01.81 in the preliminaries.

Junior sprinter Caitlin Kirsteier gave the Seahawks a second-place finish in the 100 Freestyle with a school-record time of 49.85.

The Lady Seahawks wrapped up their impressive climb through the championships, setting a school-record in the 400 Freestyle Relay. The team of freshmen Anna Munger, Mattie Riley, Alden Dyer and Kirsteier fashioned a time of 3:23.53 in finishing third.
