WILMINGTON, N.C. – UNC Wilmington junior Danielle Mortensen set a pool record in the 1650 Freestyle as the Seahawks swept visiting College of Charleston in swimming and diving action Sunday at the Seahawk Natatorium.
The Lady Seahawks improved to 4-7 with a 140-93 win while the men upped their mark to 2-6 following a 137-92 victory. Charleston, who was swimming in its third meet of the weekend, dropped to 3-6 on the women’s side and 4-3 on the men’s.
Mortensen, who also won the 500 Freestyle (5:06.56), broke the old pool mark of 17:16.24, set in 1989, with a time of 17:08.17.
Also winning a pair of events for the Lady Seahawks were Laura Chinni and Caitlin Kirsteier. Chinni won the 200 IM (2:10.89) and the 100 Backstroke (1:00.54) later in the meet. Kirsteier, meanwhile, claimed the 50 and 100 Freestyles with times of 24.44 and 53.64, respectively.
Freshman Luke Murphy highlighted the Seahawk men’s results winning both the 500 and 1650 Freestyles. Murphy posted a time of 4:45.82 in the 500 and 16:13.89 in the 1650.
UNCW used a balanced effort as five different Seahawks won events in the men’s meet.
The Seahawks return to the pool on Jan. 19 when they visit Colonial Athletic Association foe William & Mary.
