RICHMOND, Virginia – UNCW won six events combined between the women and men on Saturday at the Collegiate School Aquatic Center as the Seahawk men topped Old Dominion, 199-152, and the women split with Richmond, losing 196-156, and knocking off ODU, 190-160.

The Seahawks improved to 1-1 on the men’s season while the women moved to 1-2. It was the dual meet opener for both UR and ODU.

UNCW opened the morning session in grand style, sweeping the 200 Medley Relays. The men’s relays of junior Valtteri Halonen, senior Michael Baric, sophomore Zach Sowers and senior Joe Gallene topped the field with a time of 1:33.54. On the women’s side, junior Hannah Stephenson, sophomore Christine Souther, senior Rachel Sears and junior Chelsea Tomko combined for a winning time of 1:46.26.

Stephenson and Halonen would give UNCW another sweep as both won in the 200 Backstroke.

Freshman Ross Wyand added a win in the 400 IM for the Seahawks.

In the 400 Free Relay, Baric, sophomore Adam Salzman, junior Alex LaBonge and senior Gabe Thran closed out the meet with a Seahawk win.

The Seahawks host NCAA Division III power Emory on Oct. 19 at 11 a.m. when they return to the pool.
