Seahawk Men Edge Monarchs, 177-176

Release: 10/13/2012 NORFOLK, Virginia - Needing to capture two of the three scoring places in the 400 meter Freestyle relay, UNCW's men's team took first and third to edge Old Dominion, 177-176, in Colonial Athletic Association swimming and diving action on Saturday. The Seahawk women dropped a pair of dual meets to Richmond and host Monarchs. The relay of sophomore Valtteri Halonen, senior Stephen Conrad, freshman Cyrus Hashemi and junior Joe Gallene blew the Monarchs away for third in the deciding relay, taking the scoring spot with a time of 3:07.40 while Monarchs were over six seconds behind in fourth. In that final relay of the meet, the squad of sophomore Nick Lowe, junior Gabe Thran, sophomore Alex Labonge and senior Michael Williams set a pool record with a time of 3:04.52 to win the race. UNCW also won the 200 Medley Relay earlier in the day when Halonen, sophomore C.J. Fiala, Conrad and Gallene combined to set a pool record with a mark of 1:32.04. Halonen also won the 200 Backstroke and setting a pool standard with a time of 1:50.90. On the women's side, senior Carly Tanner posted UNCW's lone win of the day, taking top honors in the 100 Freestyle (52.95). The women's team fell to Richmond, the reigning Atlantic 10 conference champions, 115.5-47.5, and to ODU, 95-68. The Seahawks visit Emory on Oct. 20 when they next take to the pool.
