FAIRFAX, Virginia - UNCW set three meet records on the opening day as the Seahawk women stand in second and the men third at the Patriot Invitational on Thursday at the McKay Natatorium. UNCW's women's team trails UMBC by just 4.5 points after one day of competition. The men are a distant third with 192.5 points. UMBC also leads the men's meet with 349 points. The Seahawks swept the opening event of the evening finals session, taking the 200 Freestyle Relays with meet record times. The women's relay of Carly Tanner, Mattie Riley, Nicole Miller and Anna Munger posted a time of 1:33.50. In the men's race, the relay squad of Joe Gallene, Gabe Thran, Alex Aguilar and Michael Williams recorded a winning time of 1:22.60. UNCW's other meet record time came in the men's 400 Medley Relay when they team of Valtteri Halonen, Ray McGorry, Stephen Conrad and Williams broke away from the rest of the field with a winning time of 3:22.08. In individual events, Munger and Gallene won the women and men's 50 Free, respectively. Munger won with a time of 23.28 while Gallene clocked in at 20.66. In diving, UNCW's Meg Gildea posted a tie for second-place finish in the 3-meter board with 221.50 points. The meet continues on Friday with the preliminaries at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m. |
