CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – Stephen Topping won the men’s 500 Freestyle and UNCW combined for six second-place finishes on the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

Topping, who also finished third in the 200 Freestyle, edged teammate Nik Hammond by just under two seconds to win the 500 Free.

Posting second-place finishes on the day were Matt Byrd (100 Back), Marc Brittain (100 Breast), Jeff Laliberte (100 Fly) and Hammond (500 Free). For the women, Taylor Wilson finished second in the 100 Breast and Heather Shaver in the 500 Free.

Emma Werkiser finished third in the 100 Fly after winning the preliminary earlier in the day. Also recording third-place finishes for UNCW were Cameron Waahburn (200 Free) and Katie Lohr (50 Free).

Adding third-place finishes for the Seahawks were Sarah Doyle in the 100 Breast and Garrett Spake in the 500 Free.

The meet concludes on Sunday.
