WILMINGTON, N.C. Nominations are being sought for the eighth induction of the UNC Wilmington Athletic Hall of Fame, which is scheduled to take place early in 2010.

The Hall of Fame honors former student-athletes, coaches and administrators at the institution. Thirty-two individuals have been honored at seven inductions since the Hall of Fame was established in 1998, including the inaugural inductee, former coach and athletic director William J. Brooks.

Inductions are held every other year, with the last class recognized in 2008. That group included baseball standout Sandy Dew, coaching veteran Calvin Lane, men’s track and field pioneer Michael McDuffie, and women’s soccer scoring phenom Christy Timbers Rife.

According to the Hall’s criteria, candidates must have made outstanding contributions during their association with the university. If a student-athlete, the individual must have left the university as a graduate. If a teacher-coach or administrator, the candidate must have held that position for at least five years. Special consideration will be given for significant contributions to society through community activities and performance in chosen fields that bring credit and distinction to the university.

Anyone may nominate a prospective candidate to the Hall of Fame. Nomination forms may be obtained on the department’s web site (UNCWsports.com) or at the Sports Information Office in the Nixon Annex on campus. Nominations must be submitted to Joe Browning, Chairman, UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame, UNC Wilmington, 601 South College Road, Wilmington, N.C. 28403.
