NORFOLK, Va. – Cameron Roth held Old Dominion to one run over six innings and Cody Stanley drove in four runs on three hits as UNC Wilmington earned a spot in next week’s Colonial Athletic Association tournament with a 10-2 win on Friday at the Bud Methaney Baseball Complex.

The Seahawks raised their record to 28-20 overall and 10-7 in the league. The Monarchs, who now need a win to make the tournament, fell to 21-25 and 12-11. The win moved UNCW into second place past Georgia State by virtue of a higher winning percentage.

Roth, who went a career-long six innings, limited the Monarchs to a run on four hits and four walks. He fanned four and rolled three ground ball double plays.

Stanley plated his four runs on three hits including a double and his 11th homer of the season. Junior Mike Rooney added three hits. Junior Ben Thielsen fueled the Seahawks at the bottom of the order with two hits and two runs batted in.

ODU’s Jake McAloose, meanwhile, continued to swing a hot bat for the Monarchs with two more hits.

UNCW limited the Monarchs to just five hits on the evening.

Back-to-back doubles off the bats of junior Robbie Monday and sophomore Alex Hill produced the first run of the game for the Seahawks in the second inning. Hill, who was sacrificed to third, later scored on a balk when ODU starter Brady Burchill (3-3) got his spikes caught on the mound during his delivery.

Burchill was tagged with the loss after allowing nine runs, eight earned, on 11 hits in seven innings.

ODU loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with one out, but Roth rolled a ground ball double play off the bat of Hernandez to end the threat.

Junior Grayson Evans extended UNCW’s lead with a double to left that scored Thielsen, who led off with a single, from first. Stanley made it 4-0 with a RBI single through the right side. Monday plated Stanley with a sacrifice fly to right for the third run of the inning and gave UNCW a 6-0 lead.

After threatening in the second, ODU got on the board in third. Roth retired the first two hitters before McAloose doubled off the wall in center. Josh Wright drew a walk to put runners on the corners. Roth was then called for a balk on a throw to first and McAloose scored.

A single by Rooney and a fielding error allowed junior Rhett Miller to reach safely to open the fourth for the Seahawks. Both moved up on a ground out for the first out. Thielsen knocked in Rooney with another ground out for a 6-1 lead.

The Seahawks had a chance to grow their lead in the sixth and Thielsen came through in the clutch with a double to left that score Rooney, who led off with a single. Stanley added a two-run double to left to give UNCW a 9-1 lead. It was UNCW’s sixth double to tie their season-high set Thursday night against the Monarchs.

Gerry Hall doubled off freshman reliever Tyler McSwain to open the eighth and moved over to third when McAloose ground out to the right side. Hall completed the circuit scoring on a wild pitch to move ODU to within 9-2.

Stanley greeted ODU reliever Phil McCarthy with a homer to center field on the first pitch of the ninth inning.

The series concludes on Saturday with a 2 p.m. start. Freshman Steve Davis will make his second start of the season for the Seahawks.
