CLEMSON, S.C. – Chris Epps went 3-for-3, including a pair of doubles, and drove in three runs as No. 19 Clemson handed UNC Wilmington a 13-2 loss on Friday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
The Tigers improved to 33-16 with the non-conference win while the Seahawks saw their modest four-game winning streak come to an abrupt end and fell to 25-18. CU also extended its winning streak against UNCW to seven as the series resumed for the first time since 1998.
Clemson righthander Trey Delk raised his record to 3-1 after limiting the Seahawks to a run on five hits in five innings of work. He walked one and struck out two.
The Tiger bullpen closed out the game allowing just one run on four hits over four innings.
John Nester and Jason Stolz each added two hits as the Tigers held a 12-9 advantage in the hit column.
UNCW issued 12 walks on the night, the most since the 2007 season when they walked a dozen at Wake Forest on March 4. Seven of the Seahawks’ 12 walks would come around and score.
Offensively, juniors Ben Thielsen and Robbie Monday and sophomore Cody Stanley had two hits apiece for the Seahawks.
Clemson jumped in front in the bottom of the second against UNCW junior starter Seth Frankoff, who was making his third start of the season against a nationally-ranked opponent. Frankoff, who was tagged with the loss and fell to 2-5 on the season, walked a batter and allowed a bloop single after retiring the first batter of the inning. Nester followed with a doubled off the wall in center to score Will Boyd and sent Brad Miller to third. Stolz drew a walk to load the bases for Epps who drew the third walk of the inning and forced in the second run. Mike Freeman added the third run with a sacrifice fly one batter later.
Frankoff lasted just four innings and allowed five runs on five hits and four walks.
Junior Matt Holt got the Seahawks on the board in the fourth with a two-out double, his ninth of the season, to left that scored sophomore David Shambley from first. The double extended Holt’s hitting streak to a season-high eight games.
After a 38-minute delay for lightening in the area in the fourth inning with two out, Stolz stole second and scored when Epps laced a double to left for a 4-1 lead. Stolz had reached base prior to the delay with a single. Freeman followed with a double to center to bring in the second run of the inning as CU built a 5-1 lead.
Clemson broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth with five runs as 10 batters made their way to the plate for a 10-1 lead. UNCW walked four batters in the inning. Sophomore reliever Justin Bradley opened the inning with three consecutive walks, all which scored, and managed just one strike in 13 pitches. Miller, who finished with two runs batted in, knocked in the first run with a sac fly to center and Epps’ third hit of the night brought in his third RBI of the night.
UNCW’s final run of the night came in the sixth on junior Robbie Monday’s 10th homer of the season.
The Tigers weren’t finished scoring though, taking advantage of three more walks in the eighth to score three runs and build a 13-2 lead.
The series continues on Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
