WILMINGTON, N.C. – Junior Robbie Monday homered twice and knocked in three runs as UNC Wilmington completed a three-game, weekend sweep of Colonial Athletic Association foe Hofstra with an 11-8 win on Saturday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks improved to 14-2 overall with their fifth straight victory and opened their conference slate with a 3-0 mark. The Pride, meanwhile, dropped their ninth straight outing to open the season and fell to 0-3 in the CAA.
Monday, who took over the club lead with his third and fourth homers of the season, launched a solo shot in the fourth and belted a two-run homer in the eighth. Joining Monday with multiple hit outings were sophomore David Shambley and Matt Holt with three hits apiece and junior Mike Rooney who had a two-hit afternoon.
Red-shirt freshman Tyler Smith (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen. Smith allowed two runs on one hit and a pair of walks in 2 1/3 innings.
Senior Brody Fontaine (0-2) was credited with the loss for the Pride, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings.
Senior Adam Perlo and junior John Kenny led the HU lineup with two hits apiece, while senior Chris Mentrasti, junior Elliot Hagburg and junior Matt Prokopowicz each had two RBI.
Hofstra built a 3-0 lead, for the third time in as many games, and led 3-1 after four innings, but UNCW exploded in the fifth for five runs to take a 6-3 lead. The Pride held a 3-2 lead with two out in the inning, but Rooney knocked in two runs with a bases-loaded single off reliever Scott A’Hara. Holt moved Rooney around to third with a single to right. The Seahawks plated the final run of the inning when Holt was caught in a rundown trying to steal second, allowing Rooney to cross the plate.
UNCW added to its lead with three more runs in the sixth for a 9-3 lead. Red-shirt junior Grayson Evans drove in the first run with a double and Shambley followed with a two-run homer to centerfield. It was his first career home run.
HU, however, answered with two runs of its own in the seventh off Smith. Mentrasti lifted a sacrifice fly to right for the first run and junior Dion Pouncil followed with a RBI single one batter later.
Monday’s second home run of the day, coming off senior Bobby Neelon in the eighth, was a two-run shot that extended UNCW’s lead to 11-5.
The Pride tacked on three runs in the ninth highlighted by a two-run double by junior Matt Prokopowicz.
The Seahawks hit the road for the first time this season on Mar. 18, when they visit North Carolina Central for a 6 p.m. start. Hofstra will open a 10-game homestand on the same day, hosting St. John’s at 3 p.m.
