WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Sophomore Jailyn Ford hurled her second shutout of the weekend to lead James Madison to a 1-0 victory over UNCW in the finale of a thre-game Colonial Athletic Association series Saturday at Boseman Field.

The Dukes finished the regular season with a 41-13 overall record and a 15-3 mark in league play as they captured the league’s regular season title and earned the right to host the 2014 CAA Softball Championship May 7-9 at Veterans Memorial Park. The Seahawks, meanwhile, ended their season at 18-34 and 4-13.

Ford scattered five hits over seven innings of work to improve to 21-6 on the season. She did not issue a walk and struck out eight as she surpassed the 200-strikeout plateau for the second consecutive season.

Junior Casey Rowland was the tough-luck loser for the Seahawks as she surrendered just one run on four hits and three walks to move to 10-15 on the campaign. Rowland struck out five in a complete-game effort.

Ford was 2-for-2 at the plate for the Dukes while sophomore Erica Ford and freshman Taylor Newman accounted for the Dukes other two base hits in the contest.

Senior Brittany Gamby was 2-for-3 to highlight the UNCW lineup. Rowland, senior Casey Shue and sophomore Erin Brown recorded the other three Seahawk hits in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED: In another tight pitcher’s duel between Ford and Rowland that saw the two teams combine for just nine total hits, the Dukes plated the only run of the game in the top of the sixth.

With two outs in the frame, Ford kept the inning alive with a double to right center. She was replaced by freshman pinch runner Carli Lemelin, who would score one batter later on a pair of wild pitches during an intentional walk to Ford to give JMU a 1-0 lead.

UNCW threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth as senior Brittany Gamby and Casey Shue recorded back-to-back singles with two outs to put the tying run into scoring position. Ford was able to work out of the jam, however, retiring the next batter she faced to end the threat.
