|Waves Take Pitcher's Duel From UNCW, 2-1|
MALIBU, Calif. – UNCW sophomore starter Evan Phillips turned in another strong start for the Seahawks, but Pepperdine was able to take advantage of a two-out rally in the sixth inning to win 2-1 on Tuesday at Eddy D. Field.
The Waves ran their record to 9-3 with the non-conference win and their seventh straight at home. The Seahawks saw their mark dip to 5-6 with the road loss.
Pepperdine used seven pitchers in the midweek test with Jayson Balades (2-0) picking up the win. Phillips (1-2) took the loss for UNCW after allowing two runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks. He finished with a season-high four strikeouts.
Bryan Langlois, Brad Anderson and Aaron Barnett each had two hits for Pepperdine, who outhit the Seahawks, 7-6, in the pitcher’s duel.
How it happened: In the sixth, pinch hitter Brandon Caruso lined a two-out single to centerfield with the bases loaded to tie the game and a throwing error to third allowed the second and eventual game-winning run to score.
Inside the box score: UNCW was 0-for-5 in RBI opportunities while Pepperdine was 1-for-10 … Both teams combined to strand 15 runners on base (UNCW 5, Pep 10) …
