Time of game: 3:25
The Seahawks improved to 5-5 with the win and halted a brief two-game skid. Baylor (5-4), meanwhile, saw its own losing streak extended to two games.
Baylor reliever Josh Michalec (0-1) took the loss for the Bears, allowing three runs, all in the ninth, on five hits and a pair of walks.
Thorburn went 4-for-5 in raising his average to .364 while Connelly elevated his average to .346 with a 2-for-4 showing at the plate.
Mitch Price led BU with two hits while Darryn Sheppard homered for his only hit of the game.
How it happened: The Seahawks set nine batters to the plate in the top of the ninth to take the 5-3 lead. Connelly knocked in the first run with a one-out single to tie it and Thorburn followed later in the inning with a single to left to give UNCW its first lead of the game. Ryan LaGrange capped the scoring with a bases-loaded fielder’s choice.
The turning point: Baylor held a 3-2 lead and had a runner at third with one out in the eighth when Secrest came on in relief. He got Logan Brown to pop up to second and he stuck out West Tunnell to end the threat. UNCW would then plate three in the ninth to take the lead.
Inside the box score: Both teams combined to land its leadoff hitter on base a combined nine times in 18 chances (UNCW 5-9, BU 4-9) … UNCW advanced runners in 13-of-20 opportunities and plated runners on third base in all three chances … The Bears had two-out RBI’s from Mitch Price and Adam Toth … UNCW pitchers limited BU to four hits in 16 at bats with runners on base.
Notes: This was the first game between the two programs and matched a pair of active coaches with 700 career wins … Corey Dick extended his hitting streak to six games while Dillon Bass pushed his to five … Bass also reached base safely for the eighth straight game … Thorburn now has a three-hit game and two four-hit games this season … Monroe has now tossed 12.2 innings without allowing an earned run … UNCW has now played three schools in the current alignment of the Big 12 (West Virginia, TCU and Oklahoma) all-time … The last win was against TCU in 2012.
Up next: The Seahawks will head up the coast for a 5 p.m. EST start on Tuesday at West Coast Conference favorite Pepperdine. The game will be broadcast on AM630.net and locally on the AM dial at 630.
