|Seahawks Beat CofC In CAA Tennis Opener|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – No. 48 UNCW won its second straight men’s tennis match by beating the College of Charleston, 7-0, in a Colonial Athletic Association action Sunday at the UNCW Courts.
The Seahawks evened their record at 3-3 and played the second match in a five-match homestand. UNCW entertains Elon on Friday, Feb. 21, at 1 p.m. in its next match.
“We knew the College of Charleston had a talented team and we would have to play well to beat them,” said seventh-year UNCW Head Coach Mait DuBois. “I was pleased with how we competed in singles today and maintained our intensity from start to finish. Rafael (Aita) put in a very solid performance and (Zach) Hublitz was very solid and was able to lift his teammates around him with his energy level.
“We were fortunate to get the doubles point today and our No. 3 team stepped up in some big moments to clinch it for us. CofC really had a lot of momentum through the middle of the matches and it really highlighted some areas we need to get better in.”
The Seahawks won the early point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The top tandem of Rafael Aita and Sam Williams, ranked 49th nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, topped Charlie Ghriskey and Brice Allanic, 8-3, and the No. 3 team of Santtu Leskinen and Zach Hublitz clinched the point by edging Rodrigo Encinas and Josh Record, 8-6.
Aita, ranked No. 120, stopped Encinas, 6-4, 6-1, at the top of the lineup to hike the score to 2-0 and Hublitz crushed Alon Faiman, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 6 singles to raise the score to 3-0.
Mol, a senior from The Netherlands, then clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-1, verdict over Ghriskey at No. 3 singles.
