|3-Point Barrage Leads Owls Past Seahawks|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – Senior Latavia Dempsey scored a team-high 17 points to pace three players in double figures as Florida Atlantic cruised to an 81-64 victory over UNCW Sunday at Trask Coliseum.
The Owls improved to 9-3 overall as they picked up their eighth victory in the last nine contests. The Seahawks, meanwhile, slipped to 1-11 as they suffered their ninth straight setback.
Dempsey was joined in double figures by fellow seniors Chenise Miller and Takia Brooks, who chipped in 15 and 13 points, respectively, to lead a FAU attack that knocked down 12 3-pointers and shot 37.5 percent (12-of-32) from beyond the arc. Miller pulled down nine rebounds and senior Kimberly Brooks pitched in eight as the Owls held a 47-42 advantage on the glass.
Senior Kelva Atkins scored 18 points to lead four UNCW players in double figures. Freshman Brie Mobley chipped in 15 while fellow newcomers Ryan Flowers and Naqaiyyah Teague added 12 and 10, respectively.
FAU never trailed in the contest, building a quick 6-2 lead before taking advantage of a 17-6 spurt midway through the frame to stretch a 15-10 lead into a 32-16 cushion with 7:19 remaining in the first half.
The Seahawks responded to the Owls spurt, rattling off seven unanswered points to trim the deficit to nine, 32-23, only to see FAU score seven of the final 10 points of the half to take a 39-26 lead into the locker room.
UNCW attempted to make it a contest early in the second half, tallying seven unanswered points during a 1:47 stretch early in the frame to pull within eight, 43-35.
That would be as close as the Seahawks would get, as FAU used a 22-8 run over a 6:28 span to take their largest lead of the game, 78-55, with 4:10 remaining. The Seahawks scored nine of the last 12 points of the game to determine the final 17-point margin.
UNCW returns to action New Year’s Eve with a Noon matchup against Appalachian State. FAU is back on the court January 2nd in a 7 p.m. home contest with Bethune-Cookman.
