FLUSHING, New York – UCLA’s doubles team of Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald edged UNCW’s Rafael Aita and Sam Williams early Friday in the men’s consolation doubles bracket of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.

Aita and Williams, UNCW’s first competitors in the prestigious event, dropped a close 8-6 decision to the Bruin pair, ending a Cinderella run for the Seahawk netters this fall.

“We took a step forward today and player better than we did in the first round,” said Mait DuBois, UNCW’s seventh-year head coach. “We had our chances, but give UCLA’s team credit because they played a very solid match. We will take a lot from this experience and I know it will help us down the road.”

Aita and Williams fell to Columbia’s Ashok Narayana and Max Schnur, 8-2, on Thursday in their opening round match in the double elimination event.

The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships serve as the culmination of the fall college tennis season. Hosted by Columbia, the event features a 32-player singles draw and a 20-team doubles draw for men and women.

The field includes the men’s and women’s champions from each of the 12 Division I USTA/ITA Regional Championships held across the country in October, winners of the USTA/ITA National Small College Super Bowl, singles quarterfinalists from the Saint Francis Health System ITA Men’s All-American Championships, singles semifinalists from the Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships along with consolation champions and doubles finalists from both All-American events.
