CARY, North Carolina – The UNCW men’s team fashioned a 7-4 singles record on the opening day of the ITA Carolina Men’s Tennis Regional Thursday at the Cary Tennis Center.

The Seahawks went a sparkling 5-1 in first-round matches before settling for a 2-3 scorecard in the second round. Third-round matches and the first day of doubles are on tap for Friday.

In opening round matches early Thursday, sophomore Santtu Leskinen, junior Kaue Pereira, junior Zach Hublitz, sophomore Christiaan Van der Burgh and senior Rafael Aita all registered victories. Leskinen outlasted Clemson’s Christian Harris, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, Pereira downed East Carolina’s Nicholas Soriano, 6-4, 6-4, Hublitz trimmed the College of Charleston’s Crescente Lesser, 7-6 (4), 6-2, Van der Burgh crushed N.C. Central’s Fabrice George, 6-1, 6-0, and Aita raced past Winthrop’s Peter Nagovnak, 6-1, 6-4.

Van der Burgh and Aita also prevailed in the second round and advanced. Van der Burgh scooted past Gardner-Webb’s Ernesto Alberch, 7-5, 6-3, and Aita, the fourth seed, held off Clemson’s Brent Lett, 6-3, 6-7 (8), 6-3.

UNCW’s three doubles entries are all in action Friday. Hublitz and Van der Burgh are lined up against UNC’s James Coxe and Ronnie Schneider in a 9 a.m. pairing, while Leskinen and Pereira meet Winthrop’s Yuta Hirokawa and Steven Patrick at the same time. Aita and Williams are seeded second in the draw and drew a first-round bye.
