WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW incoming freshman Alyssa Desjardins was recently named to the All-Tournament Team at the 34th Annual USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships as she helped her squad, Texas Advantage Black, capture the gold medal in the 18 Open Division.

Desjardins earned All-Tournament Team honors for a second consecutive season as she led TAV Black to a perfect 10-0 record in the 32-team event, held June 28-July 1 in Dallas, Texas. She was also honored with All-Tournament Team accolades after her TAV squad finished second in the 17 Open Division in 2012.

After cruising to an undefeated finish in pool play, Desjardins and TAV Black met California-based Sunshine Volleyball Club in the championship match.  Playing in front of a packed house that included Seahawks assistant coach AJ Bonetti, TAV Black defeated SVC in a two-set sweep (25-20, 25-17) and became the first Texas team to win the 18 Open Division championship.

“I can only imagine how exciting it must have felt for Alyssa and TAV Black to win a National Championship in their hometown,” UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek said. “Alyssa’s deserves all the accolades she has received and thus far in her career and we look forward to future championship moments during her time as a Seahawk.”

Desjardins was one of three incoming freshman to take part in 2013 USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships as Nicole Lott (Synergy Volleyball Club) and Kristen Powell (Triangle Volleyball Club) also participated with their respective club programs.  Lott guided SVC to a 25th-place finish while Powell helped TVC to a 27th-place result.

“I could not be more proud to have three of our incoming freshman earn bids to Nationals in the 18 Open Division,” said Bambenek. “This is the highest level of competition in the club volleyball ranks and the experience gained will be invaluable during their transition to college.”
