Junior KC Shue hit her first home run of the season in the Seahawks contest against Savannah State on Saturday
GAINESVILLE, Florida - Freshman CJ Moose went 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead UNCW to a 6-5 victory over Charleston Southern in action in the Florida Lipton Invitational on Saturday at KSP Stadium. The Seahawks fell in their other contest of the day, suffering a 13-10 setback to Savannah State in the nightcap.

UNCW moved to 4-5 on the season with the split. The Seahawks close out the Florida Lipton Invitational Sunday with a 1 p.m. contest against No. 5 Florida.

Against the Buccaneers, Charleston Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a run-scoring single by junior Hayes Holdsworth, only to see the Seahawks plate two runs in the bottom half of the frame on a RBI single by freshman Taylor Matkins and a passed ball to build a 2-1 advantage.

The two sides traded runs once again in the third. A single by junior Marci Christian and a passed ball gave the Buccaneers a 3-2 edge in the top of the frame before a two-run home run by Moose put UNCW back in front, 4-3.

A double by junior Stephanie Sbardella in the top of the fifth knotted the game at 4-all, while a squeeze bunt by freshman Jordin Phillips and a passed ball in the bottom half of the frame put the Seahawks back on top, 6-4.

Charleston Southern would pull within one in the top of the sixth on a solo home run by senior Melanie Stickney, but sophomore Jordyn Schmidt would keep the Buccaneers from plating the tying run as the Seahawks recorded their third one-run victory of the season.

Moose was the only UNCW player to record multiple hits against the Buccaneers as the Seahawks combined for seven base knocks in the contest. Schmidt was credited with the win as she moved to 2-1 on the season, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk in four innings of relief work.

Sbardella and senior Trea Steele both tallied two hits to pace the CSU lineup. Senior Linzy Rother took the loss for the Buccaneers to move to 1-1. She allowed four runs on three and two walks in 2.1 innings of work.

Versus Savannah State, UNCW would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a solo home run from junior KC Shue, only to see the Lady Tigers plate eight runs on seven hits in the bottom half of the first to build an 8-1 cushion.

The Seahawks would score in each of their next four at-bats, highlighted by a four-run fourth, but the Lady Tigers would keep pace, pushing runs across in three of those frames to maintain a 13-10 advantage after five innings. The Seahawks would be held off the scoreboard in their final two at-bats as the Lady Tigers were able to hold on for the three-run victory.

Senior Madison Hedderly was 4-for-4 with 4 RBI while Katherine Stewart was 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Lady Tigers attack. Hedderly also picked up the win in the circle for Savannah State, allowing 10 runs (six earned) on 13 hits and two walks in seven innings in the circle.

Moose and senior Lauryn Buckworth recorded three hits apiece to power a UNCW attack that recorded 13 hits. Moose was one of three UNCW players to hit a home run against Savannah State as Shue and sophomore Jordan Critcher both hit their first home runs of the season.
