Release: 09/18/2012 WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Citing the continued support and generosity of longtime benefactor George Rountree III, UNCW Chancellor Gary L. Miller announced Tuesday that the men's basketball offices at Trask Coliseum will be named the George Rountree Basketball Suite. In a special afternoon ceremony near the offices off the Trask lobby, Miller said Rountree's loyalty with the program has been significant. "George and Sylvia have made a difference on our campus in many ways as friends, volunteers and very generous donors," said Chancellor Miller. "Their commitment to the journey of learning inspires our student-athletes, coaches, faculty and staff to 'Dare to Soar.'" The UNCW Board of Trustees announced the naming in February of 2011 after Rountree and his wife Sylvia made a $250,000 contribution to support UNCW Athletics. The gift was part of the Campaign for UNCW: Soaring to Greatness, a comprehensive fundraising effort that raised more than $66.5 million in support for scholarships, programs and services across campus. Rountree, a civic leader and senior partner with Rountree, Losee & Baldwin, played a key role in the development of the Seahawk Club during its early years and served as president five times. He is a former member of the UNCW Board of Trustees and the Board of Visitors. Rountree was inducted into the UNCW Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010 and the Greater Wilmington Sports Hall of Fame in 2009. |
