CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina - Led by a trio of top-20 efforts in the opening two round, including a two-over-par 144 by junior Stefan Brewer, UNCW enters the final round of the Tar Heel Intercollegiate in a three-way tie for fourth place along with East Tennessee and NC State.

"Today was a solid start to the season for us, despite some jitters in the opening round," said UNCW Head Coach Matt Clark. "Stefan (Brewer) had a real solid afternoon for us and he looks ready to get back at it tomorrow and finish it off. Thirty-six holes is a marathon and we didn't play as well as we wanted in the final nine holes. But with that said, I know we'll be ready tomorrow and compete every hole."

Duke leads the 14-team field by eight strokes over Charlotte and host UNC Chapel Hill, who are tied for second. The 49ers and Tar Heels hold an eight-stroke lead of their own over the Seahawks, Buccaneers and Wolfpack.

NCSU's Albin Choi owns a three-stroke lead over UNC's Patrick Barrett and Michael McGowen.

After opening with a two-over-par 74, Brewer finished the day with a two-under score of 70 to move up into a tie for 14th. Brewer totaled four birdies and a bogey on the round.

Joining Brewer in the top-20 are junior Payne McLeod and senior Thomas Bass. McLeod played his usually steady golf going 73-72 in the opening 36 holes. Bass, meanwhile, found himself in contention for medalist honors after carding a four-under 68 in the opening round, but struggled in the second round with a five-over 77. After recording six birdies in the first round, Bass made just one in the second round while posting a pair of double-bogeys.
