Ten home games and contests against four teams that advanced to the 2011 NCAA Tournament highlight the 2012 schedule

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Ten home games, matchups with four teams that advanced to the 2011 NCAA Tournament and 10 Colonial Athletic Association contests highlight the 2012 UNCW women's soccer schedule, Head Coach Paul Cairney announced Friday.

The Seahawks will play a 19-game slate in 2012, with the 10 games at the UNCW Soccer Stadium to be balanced by eight road tilts and one neutral site affair.

"We have certainly set out a challenging schedule for the 2012 season," said Cairney.  "Our young team will benefit tremendously from playing top-level opponents during the non-conference portion of our schedule. The key will be to continually get better with every game and be ready to compete in what is sure to be another competitive CAA regular season."

UNCW begins preparations for the 2012 campaign with an exhibition contest against in-state foe UNC Chapel Hill (Aug. 8) before opening the regular season with three straight contests against schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The three-game stretch begins Aug. 17 as the Seahawks will open the regular season and the Virginia Tech Tournament with a matchup against the host Hokies, who advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament a year ago.

UNCW closes out the two-day event in Blacksburg against 2011 national semifinalist Wake Forest (Aug. 19) before returning to the Commonwealth one week later for a matchup with Virginia (Aug. 26), who advanced to the quarterfinals of the last season's NCAA Tournament.

The Seahawks make their home debut Aug. 31 with a visit from Charlotte, a contest that marks the start of four straight games in the Port City for Cairney's squad. Fellow Queen City rival Davidson (Sept. 2) makes the trip west to wrap up Labor Day weekend before the Seahawks entertain Campbell, Elon and Troy in the UNCW Courtyard by Marriott Wilmington Invitational. UNCW opens the second edition of the four-team event against Campbell (Sept. 7) before closing out the weekend versus Troy (Sept. 9).

A trip to Coastal Carolina (Sept. 13) and a visit to the UNCW Soccer Stadium from long-time foe East Carolina (Sept. 16) bring an end to the non-conference portion of the schedule.

The Seahawks open conference play Sept. 20 with a home matchup against Hofstra and will play three of their first four league games at the UNCW Soccer Stadium as a trip to Northeastern (Sept. 23) is followed by home contests against Drexel (Sept. 28) and Delaware (Sept. 30).

October begins with a visit to defending CAA regular-season and tournament champion William and Mary (Oct. 4) before the UNCW return home for its final home contests of the regular season as Old Dominion (Oct. 7) and James Madison (Oct. 11) both make stops in Wilmington.

UNCW closes out the regular season with three straight road contests, starting with visits to Towson (Oct. 21) and George Mason (Oct. 24) before concluding with a trip to Georgia State (Oct. 24).

"The CAA continues to be an outstanding conference for women's soccer," said Cairney. "Every game is fiercely competitive and we know that we will have many one-goal games. Our hope is that our tough non-conference schedule will prepare our young squad for the battles we will face in our quest to win a CAA Championship."

The 2012 CAA Women's Soccer Championship will once again be a six-team event that begins Oct. 28 with first-round contests at campus sites. The winners of the two first-round contests will join the top-two seeds for the semifinals (Nov. 2) and championship (Nov. 4), to be held at the home of the regular-season champion.
