          Harris, a shortstop, played a key role in Wilmington College's national run in the early 1960s. He played three seasons for the Seahawks in 1963, 1964 and 1966. Harris ranked second on the team with a .378 batting average as UNCW captured the 1963 National Junior College Championship in Grand Junction, Colo. Harris went 8-for-12 at the dish and reached base in 18-of-21 plate appearances at the JUCO World Series, earning All-Tournament honors.

         A 27th round selection in the 1966 draft, Harris signed a contract with the Cleveland Indians and played professional baseball from 1966-72. Harris made his big league debut on June 16, 1968, and went 2-for-3 in Cleveland's game against the Boston Red Sox. He played two seasons in the Major Leagues in 1968 with the Indians and in 1969 with the Kansas City Royals.
