CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Sophomore forward Ashley Miller scored twice and senior forward Carrie Patterson added her team-leading 11th goal of the season as Georgia defeated UNC Wilmington, 3-0, in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship Friday at Fetzer Field.
The Bulldogs improved to 15-5-1 overall as they advanced to the second round, where they will face host and top seed UNC Chapel Hill, who defeated High Point the regional's other first-round matchup by a 1-0 margin. The Seahawks, who were making their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Colonial Athletic Association Championship last weekend, finished the season at 13-8-1.
"I thought our team competed well," said UNCW Head Coach Paul Cairney. "The score does not reflect how well we played. We gave up critical goals at critical times and that was the difference in the game."
Miller opened the scoring in the 29th minute on an unassisted effort as she dribbled through the midfield before firing a shot that beat UNCW freshman keeper Caitlin Hunter just inside the post.
The game would remain a one-goal affair until midway through the second half, when the Bulldogs scored two goals less than a minute apart to put the game out of reach.
Patterson opened the sequence at the 55:15 mark as she chipped a ball played over the Seahawks backline past Hunter to make it 2-0 Georgia before Miller closed out the scoring 56 seconds after Patterson's tally as she put a loose ball into the side netting for her second goal of the game and sixth of the season to give the Bulldogs a three-goal cushion. Senior defender Natalie Farley was credited with an assist on the play.
Georgia out-shot the Seahawks by an 8-1 margin as the Bulldogs recorded four shots in each half. UNCW's lone shot of the contest came in the 61st minute off the foot of sophomore defender Ashley Dohrer.
Senior keeper Michelle Batos made one save for the Bulldogs as she recorded her eighth shutout of the season. Hunter made one save for the Seahawks before being replaced in the 67th minute by sophomore Chandler Follett.
"We accomplished something we had never done before as a program by winning the CAA Championship last weekend and playing in the NCAA Tournament, said Cairney. "I want the girls to be proud of all we accomplished this season. Tonight's game doesn't define our season."
