mbball vs Troy postgame press conference

WILMINGTON, N.C. UNC Wilmington rallied from a double-digit deficit for the second consecutive game to remain unbeaten on the new season with a 107-95 victory over visiting Troy in men’s college basketball Monday night at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks, who erased a 18-point deficit in their season-opening win over Appalachian State, came from 16 points down to improve to 2-0. The Trojans dropped to 0-2 following their second loss in three days.

UNCW has broken the century mark in all three appearances this season, including an exhibition game vs. St. Andrews (101) and regular season matchups with ASU (108) and Troy (107).

Sophomore point guard Chad Tomko led the Seahawks with 33 points, including 22 markers in the first period, and posted a career high for the second straight outing. Sophomore forward Dominique Lacy chipped in 21 points and junior guard Johnny Wolf added 20 as UNCW featured three players with 20 or more points in the second consecutive game. Freshman guard Kevon Moore also added 11 points on the bench.

Lacy added 12 rebounds for a double-double and freshman Jerel Stephenson pulled down a game-high 15 boards as UNCW won the battle on the glass, 50-42.

Troy was led by junior guard Richard Delk’s 19 points. Junior guard Travis Lee had 15 points, junior guard Regis Huddleston added 13, senior center Tom Jervis scored 12 and junior guard Brandon Hazzard contributed 10 for the Trojans, who shot 43.7 percent from the floor.

Troy set a single game record for opponents by shooting 41 three’s, including 24 in the first half. The Trojans eclipsed the record of 39 launched by William and Mary on Feb. 2, 2008.

The game was the highest scoring outing in Benny Moss’ three-year stint and tied for the fifth highest scoring game in UNCW history.

The Trojans built a 55-47 lead at the break by dialing long distance early and often against the Seahawks. Huddleston scored 13 points and Delk had 10  to give Troy an eight-point advantage heading into the second half.

UNCW still trailed 61-55 with 16:30 remaining when Delk connected on a shot in the paint. The Seahawks then strung together runs of eight and 11 points for a suffocating 19-3 spurt that gave them some breathing room.

Wolf capped the decisive run with a spinning underhand layup and added a free throw for a conventional three-point play that put the Seahawks ahead, 74-64. The lead swelled to as many as 15 points until Troy made a trifecta in the waning seconds.

UNCW jumped out to an early 18-9 lead in the first half before Troy took control with a 16-0 run. Stephenson’s layup with 5:30 left pulled the Seahawks within 36-30 with 5:30 left in the first period.

But Troy outscored UNCW, 17-5, over the next five minutes to build a 49-33 cushion on Kenny Ware’s triple from the top of the key. UNCW reeled off nine consecutive points to slice the deficit to 49-42 when Tomko drained a trey from long range. Tomko later cut the lead to 55-47 at intermission when he sank a 3-pointer with three seconds left, giving him 22 points at intermission.

The Seahawks shot 49.3 percent from the floor, but struggled mightily at the free throw line, connecting on just 17-for-26 from the charity stripe.

UNCW makes its road debut Wednesday at nationally-ranked Wake Forest, taking on the Demon Deacons in a 7 p.m. tilt at Lawrence Joel Coliseum. The game kicks off a five-game road trip for the Seahawks.

Troy, meanwhile, meets Centenary on Wednesday in a first-round matchup of the LSU Thanksgiving Tourney in Baton Rouge, La.
