WILMINGTON, N.C. – Led by Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Year Mark Carver and Rookie-of-the-Year Cameron Roth, UNC Wilmington placed a school-record five players on the 2008 North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) All-State squad released on Wednesday. Joining Carver and Roth were junior Brad Holt and seniors Jason Appel and Daniel Hargrave.
Carver, who was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 33rd round of the Major League Baseball draft last week, was a third-team Louisville Slugger All-America selection after tying the school-record of 21 home runs in a season and setting a single season standard with a conference-leading 82 runs batted in. Carver also tied the single season mark with 71 runs scored.
Roth wrapped up his rookie campaign with a 5-3 mark, four saves and a 3.77 earned run average. Roth was honored as a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America earlier this month. As a freshman the lefthander led the staff with 33 appearances covering 45 1/3 innings. Opponents hit just .236 against him with just eight extra base hits.
Holt, who joined Carver as a third-team Louisville Slugger All-America, anchored the Seahawk rotation by winning his last 11 decisions, a school-record, and fashioning an impressive 11-1 mark. He became the highest drafted player in the program’s history when he was tabbed by the New York Mets with the 33rd pick overall in the draft. A hard-throwing righthander, Holt fanned a career-high 95 batters in 93 1/3 innings and held opponents in checking with a conference-leading .225 batting average.
Appel, meanwhile, became the school’s all-time career hits leader with 260 after hitting .397 with a career-high and conference-best 100 hits. He was a first-team All-CAA outfielder and finished with 16 doubles, five triples and five homers, in addition to stealing 21 bases. Appel was selected by Tampa Bay with the first pick of the 22nd round in the draft.
Rounding out the Seahawk contingent is senior Daniel Hargave, who was picked by Philadelphia in the 22nd round. Hargrave connected on 18 homers this season and finished second on the career-list with 39. Hargarve started all 62 games at second base for UNCW and responded by hitting .333 and tying for the single-season record with 71 runs scored. He finished as UNCW’s all-time leader in total bases (429) and runs scored (187).
As a team offensively, UNCW, who earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, finished with a school-record 44 wins and reached the championship game of the Cary Regional, where it was eliminated by North Carolina. The Seahawks set a school-record with 91 home runs while posting a program-record .516 slugging percentage and .415 on base average. UNCW led the CAA in homers (91), runs scored (517), walks (316), total bases (1112), hit by pitches (84), sacrifice bunts (63) and sacrifice flies (32).
On the mound, Seahawk hurlers paced the 11-team circuit with a 4.97 ERA and tied for the conference lead with an opponents’ .268 batting average. In conference play, UNCW recorded a 3.84 ERA while opponents hit just .255 and drew a league-low 88 walks. UNCW’s 25 wins were also a program and conference record.
