WILMINGTON, N.C. - Melissa Jarrell’s seven-year stint as UNC Wilmington’s softball coach has ended after the veteran leader stepped down Friday.

Jarrell, 44, took over the program in 2001-02 and piloted the Seahawks to a 149-250-1 mark. Her overall record stands at 349-482-3 over 16 seasons at three institutions.

“Melissa and I met two weeks ago and had a lengthy conversation about the direction of the program,” said Kelly Mehrtens, UNCW’s athletic director. “Because of personal reasons, she feels it’s in her best interest to resign at this time. We appreciate her many contributions to the program and wish her the best of luck in the future."

The Seahawks went 12-33-1 overall and 3-18 in the CAA this past spring. UNCW advanced to the CAA Tournament in 2006 and 2007 before missing out on the four-team field this year.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here at UNCW,” said Jarrell. “I’ve had tremendous support from the team and athletic administration over the last seven years. The program continues to grow, and I think it will continue to flourish.”

A national search for Jarrell’s replacement is expected to get under way soon.
