|Diamond Hawks Fall To Tribe, 12-6|
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – William & Mary advanced to championship Saturday of the Colonial Athletic Association baseball tournament with a 12-6 win over UNCW on Friday at Brooks Field.
The top-seeded Tribe upped its record to 34-21 while the Seahawks, the third-seed, concluded their season with a 30-27 record. William and Mary will have to beat second-seed College of Charleston twice on Saturday to win the tournament.
Tribe starter Nick Brown (5-1), who went six innings, allowed three runs, one earned, on six hits and two walks for the win.
Derek Lowe held game-high honors with three hits while four other hitters in the WM lineup had two-hit games. Michael Katz had two hits and knocked in three runs. Kevin Nutter doubled twice and scored twice.
UNCW starter Evan Phillips (2-4) took the loss and didn’t make it out of the second inning. He walked four, hit one and allowed six runs, all in the second inning.
How it happened: The Tribe broke through with six runs in the second inning as UNCW starter Evan Phillips walked four straight to open the inning. He later hit a batter for a run and Nick Thompson followed with a 2-run double and Michael Katz added a 2-run single.
Inside the box score: The Tribe batted around the order in both the second and third innings … W&M went 7-for-16 (.438) with two outs and knocked in seven two-out RBI’s … UNCW landed its leadoff hitter on base safely in each of the last seven innings … Both teams scored three runners from third with less than two out …
Notes: UNCW fell to 5-3 all-time against W&M in the CAA tournament … It was the first meeting in the CAA tournament between the two since 2008 (W&M, 11-8) … The Seahawks finished the season with a 20-14 record at home … In the first game on Friday, Kelly Secrest set a school and conference record for appearances with 114.
